Dear Neighbours,

What a year 2008 was!

Like many in the community, my first reaction is to look at last year in terms of the propane explosion and recession. As traumatic as these events were, it is equally important to take stock of our progress.

Throughout last year we worked closely with our partners: community associations, City staff, organizations such as the conservation authority, and political representatives from every level of government. Personally, I've spoken with hundreds of neighbours at the Park as well as in a friary, synagogue, church, union hall and municipal offices. I believe those consultations have allowed all stakeholders to input key decisions as they are being made.

Through a series of lively sessions, we've seen the evolution of the Secondary Plan update to a point where preliminary conclusions will be available for comment at another public meeting in the spring.

Downsview Park has continued its growth other ways as well: two examples are the improved signage that will guide visitors, and our Trail of Lights event that thrilled young and old alike. Inside the organization, we've passed examination from the Auditor-General, restructured our organization, and gone through a board self-assessment.

Like every household, Downsview Park is well aware that the financial outlook now is very challenging. As a result we are reviewing our plans quarterly, in addition to our regular due diligence. On the strength of reports showing a modest rebound late in 2009, and also due to the board's commitment to the future of our Park, we have approved major contracts for public amenities. These include the creation of our lake and headwall along Keele Street and an environmentally sensitive stormwater system that will reduce the threat of flooding in the area.

Finally, let me continue to ask for your thoughts, suggestions, complaints and even compliments! Feedback can be left on a form in our website. We do our best to keep the site current, particularly with upcoming events. As well you are welcome to email me at dsoknacki@pdp.ca or phone 416-952-2222.

Best regards,
