Dear Neighbours,
What a year 2008 was!
Like many in the community,
my first reaction is to look at last year in terms of the propane
explosion and recession. As traumatic as these events were, it is
equally important to take stock of our progress.
Throughout last year we
worked closely with our partners: community associations, City staff,
organizations such as the conservation authority, and political
representatives from every level of government. Personally, I've spoken
with hundreds of neighbours at the Park as well as in a friary,
synagogue, church, union hall and municipal offices. I believe those
consultations have allowed all stakeholders to input key decisions as
they are being made.

| Welcome to a new year at
Downsview Park! I invite you to explore Downsview Park in 2009 to
experience the myriad events and recreational programs we have to offer
for people of all ages and interests. Parks are not about grass and
trees and buildings and monuments. Parks are about people. Parks are
people’s stories of celebration; of hope; of empowerment. They are there
to educate and entertain. They are there to inform and inspire. The role
and goal of our mandate is to have Canadians celebrate their lands and
the local community continues to be our first level of vital engagement.

The City of Toronto is reviewing and
updating the Downsview Area Secondary Plan, which was approved in 1999
and amended in 2001. A review and update of the Plan will ensure that
the planning policies for the area are current and appropriate to guide
future development.

While Parks are about people, it’s important that we create a beautiful place for them to enjoy and experience. More physical park building continues to happen for all to see! Work is underway on Downsview Park’s nine-acre lake. The lake is part of a much larger initiative to establish a new stormwater
management system throughout the Park. The lake itself is located in the
southwest corner of the park.

Downsview Park’s Trail of Lights lit up the skies and festive spirits for an exhilarating 34 consecutive nights from November 28 to December 31, 2008. As Canada’s largest walk-through holiday light show, the Trail of Lights featured two kilometres of light displays made up of 400,000 LED lights, including a 13-metre tall decorated tree. Visitors enjoyed free pictures with Santa and Downsie, Downsview Park’s official mascot, free wagon rides, choir performances by local school and community choirs, a photo competition and more.
