2009 promises to be a year of hope and opportunity for Downsview Park. As we build more of the Park,  I invite you to explore Downsview Park in 2009 to experience the myriad events and recreational programs we have to offer for people of all ages and interests.

Parks are not about grass and trees and buildings and monuments. Parks are about people. Parks are people’s stories of celebration; of hope; of empowerment. They are there to educate and entertain. They are there to inform and inspire. The role and goal of our mandate is to have Canadians celebrate their lands and the local community continues to be our first level of vital engagement.

In that spirit through 2008, we increased our visitorship by close to 20 percent and hosted more than 70 events and festivals. This summer we opened a new restaurant in the Park, The Hangar Grill and introduced new outdoor soccer fields and renovations to The Downsview Park Sports Centre, attracting ever more diverse visitors.

To truly fulfill our Vision to be a park for all seasons, in November Downsview Park launched the Trail of Lights. Open for 34 consecutive nights, it was Canada’s largest walk-through holiday festival with 400,000 LED lights. Plans are already underway for next year’s Trail of Lights and make it even bigger and better.

In 2009, you will see more of the park taking shape for all to enjoy. Phase 2 of the installation of the stormwater management system is about to commence, which includes the creation of a nine-acre lake in the south and west end of the Park. We are expanding our outdoor facilities at the Sports Centre, including a football field and change rooms. Much is happening and we hope you will be a part of the evolving Downsview Park experience.

We have a packed schedule of events and park development for 2009. Come by for a visit. See all that we have to offer. We welcome your input and suggestions. The grass is always greener at Downsview Park.

Come and see for yourself!

All the best.

Sincerely,

Tony Genco
