Education

What do 7,000 students have in common? Good times at Downsview Park.

If you’re a teacher or know a teacher looking for a great way to bring lessons to life in a fresh new setting, think Downsview Park’s Free School Programs. Teachers can book their students for a half or full day of educational, hands-on activity that focuses on sustainability ranging from art to science to sports.

Last year, more than 7,000 students experienced our engaging workshops.

Urban Agriculture

FoodCycles’ new location in Downsview Park is sprouting success! This summer’s crop, grown in Downsview Park, has produced 860 kilograms (1900 lbs) of food even with a late start this summer season. The rich harvest included spinach, salad mix, beans, squash, basil, parsley, kale, lettuce and cabbage. Produce was sold at FoodCycles’ weekly fresh produce markets and was supplied to seven socially conscious groups: the Hot Yam, The Garden Party and its kitchens, The Cutting Veg, Blue Bus Farmers Market, Quince Restaurant, The STOP and North York Harvest Food Bank. More than 68 kilograms (150 lbs) of fresh food was donated.

FoodCycles is working to increase its sprouts and healthy soil by composting indoors during the fall and winter months. By late spring/summer they hope to have more rich compost available.

Stewardship

Deloitte and Cadbury continued their commitment to stewardship and sustainability at Downsview Park this year. Staff from both companies volunteered their time and labour to greening projects in the park such as tree planting and birdhouse building.
